Wisdom Literature is found across several books of the Bible: Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, specific Psalms, and parts of the book of James. This genre is composed of aphorisms—brief observations or guidelines containing general truths addressing many aspects of life. While there may be rare exceptions, these are not meant to be hard, fast rules or absolute laws, but rather principles for living.
What is a "Wise" Person?
From God’s perspective, a wise person is one who fears the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). Godly fear is not a cowering fear, but one of respect, reverence, and holy regard for God. A wise person orders their behavior and faith according to the law of God, lives a disciplined life, and develops their skills to serve others. Ultimately, the source of a wise perspective is revelation—applying God’s truths to every dimension of life.
The Opposite: The Fool
The Bible defines a fool as one who says in their heart, "There is no God." A fool lives selfishly, is godless, undisciplined, wasteful, and lazy. They live only for the moment and for pleasure, without regard for the eternal.
Where is Wisdom Found?
Wisdom is taught in the home through the words and modeling of parents. It was also found among "wise people" in society—public teachers who had disciples. Most importantly, wisdom comes as revelation from God; it is God-given insight made available to all of His people.
Forms of Wisdom Literature
- Aphorisms: Brief, catchy proverbial statements that are easy to memorize. They often address the same topic from different angles, requiring a balanced study.
- Parables, Mysteries, and Songs: Lengthy discussions, essays, and poems that explore the complexities of life, such as why the righteous suffer.
- Wisdom is the beginning of knowledge. How much of your daily decision-making is rooted in the "fear of the Lord"?
- Reflect on the definition of a fool. In what areas of life are we tempted to live "godlessly," even as believers?
