Exploring the futility of life without a divine perspective.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon laments, "Vanity of vanities... all is vanity!" (Ecclesiastes 1:1-3). The word "vanity" used here (38 times in the book) means emptiness, futility, or a vapor that vanishes quickly and leaves nothing behind. This describes life lived "under the sun"—from a purely human point of view.

The Futility of Life Without God

Without a divine perspective and a relationship with God, life can appear pessimistic and futile. Solomon describes it as "frustrated deism"—a way of life where, whether righteous or evil, all eventually die (Ecclesiastes 8:14). From this perspective, chasing pleasure or wealth can feel like chasing the wind.

Enjoying God’s Gifts

However, Solomon also teaches a recurring theme: "Enjoy the blessings of life now, because life will end one day" (see Ecclesiastes 2:24). This enjoyment is not "hedonism" (sinful pleasure-seeking), but simply enjoying all that God gives us for His glory. Wealth and possessions should humble us, for we are stewards, not owners. As Deuteronomy 8:18 says, it is God who gives the power to get wealth.

The Conclusion: Holy Fear

The book concludes with a powerful instruction: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind" (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). An unholy fear makes people run away from God, but a holy fear brings them to their knees in loving submission. When you fear God, you fear nothing else.

Meditation & Revision
  • Life is "not in vain" if lived according to the will of God. How does this truth change your view of your daily labor?
  • Reflect on the difference between "hedonism" and enjoying God's gifts for His glory.
